Music has charms…

to calm the savage beast and brighten up even a blue, blah day.

Trying hard not to worry about things over which I have no control and looking forward to going home so I can veg out under the covers.  The company was holding "happy hour" but I was in no mood to drink so didn’t bother going.  Was about to leave when
Sandy came over to tell me that there were boxes full of CD’s near the media center for the taking.  Turns out that the media center, which has an extensive collection of music from which producers and directors choose songs for commercials, had transferred everything to digital and was giving it all away.  Despite the crowd, I managed to snag some fairly decent CD’s including:

Shangri-La by the Rutles
Working Class Hero – A Tribute To John Lennon
Three Days Grace
David Foster – The Christmas Album
Take A Look In The Mirror by Korn
Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle
Soundtrack to "Someone Like You" (I love Tom Jones’ cover of "Burning Down The House")
Seventeen Days by 3 Doors Down

I also got a few compilations that were created for pitches and commercials.  Seems like fate, destiny, divine intervention (whatever you want to call it) stepped in to help pick up my mood on what could have been a very long, dreary weekend.

By the way, for those of you who have no idea who The Rutles are…
The Rutles originally began as a sketch on Eric Idle’s UK show "Rutlland Weekend Televison".  Later, Lorne Michaels included the clip on SNL when Idle hosted in 1975, which led to the TV special "All You Need Is Cash".  It’s a wonderful, witty spoof of The Beatles.  Here are some pictures of The Pre-fab Four as well as the link to their official site:

Outback, Brokeback & the Saturday Night Lesbians

For this to make sense, I have to start with Lisa.  I first met her online in the BBW*NJ chat room on MSN.  It was a fun room and the best part was that the chatters would get together, once or twice a month, to have a good time and meet the faces on the other side of the computer.  Lisa and I met in person at the first "official" chat party on November 29, 2002,which was held at Charlie’s, a dive bar near her home in Clifton, NJ.  The attendees were Lisa, Jimmy (who she was interested in at the time), Wendy (more about her in a bit), Paul (my date that night) and me.  The first picture is of Paul, me, Lisa and Jimmy at the first chat party… Wendy was the photographer.  The second picture is of a later chat party at Charlie’s… Wendy’s on the right in the pink sweater.

Lisa and I hit it off really well and would often talk on the phone.  Since I don’t have a car and she did (and didn’t live far from me), she would be my ride to the chat parties.  Sometimes, when there wasn’t a party, she’d come get me and we’d drive down to the shore just to avoid being home alone on a Saturday night.  We began referring to each other as our "Saturday Night Lesbian Date".  (For the record, there was no lesbian sexual activity… sorry to disappoint you guys).  Most of those nights, Lisa would wear a lacy purple bra and flash men in parking lots before driving off or on the Garden State Parkway which was no mean feat while she was driving.  (Also for the record, I never flashed anyone… I didn’t want to be held responsible for hysterical blindness or some horrific crash.)

The chat parties grew and would be held in locations all over the state.  We went back to Charlie’s a couple of times, also to Jenk’s in Point Pleasant and Pistol Pete’s in Pleasantville.  Towards the end, the chat room became a fan base for a southern NJ band called Piece of Candi and the parties were held at the various bars where they played.  It was at one of those bars in Union Beach where I met John.

The Saturday Night Lesbian Dates continued until she met a guy who shall remain nameless (as he turned out to be a total jerk) and I began dating John (not a jerk but has too many issues).  Needless to say, things didn’t go well with Lisa’s relationship… shortly afterward, she decided a change of scenery was needed and moved to Florida to be closer to her family.  Although she’s been there over 2 years, Lisa’s still not fond of Florida since she prefers colder weather but she has a job she loves and made some great new friends who I had the pleasure of meeting during my visit to Lisa last May.

After Lisa left New Jersey, Wendy and I began hanging out and became close friends.  She is a fun, very witty lady who can be quite sarcastic at times but that’s one of the things I really like about her.  We advise each other on love and life although we rarely take each other’s advice… LOL!  We’ve also gone on little road trips, once taking a last-minute detour to Atlantic City after visiting a friend we had made in the BBW*NJ chat room.  One of our best times together had to be when we decided last year to meet a local guy from another chat room who had been flirting with both of us.  The company he worked for at the time puts on annual musical plays to benefit local children’s charities.  The musical was Bye Bye Birdie and he played one of the lead roles.  Wendy and I kept a running commentary during the whole show (quietly of course)… I don’t remember having laughed as much or as hard as I did that night.

For all the times Wendy and I have gotten together, we managed to avoid doing so on a Saturday night and continuing the "Lesbian" tradition that Lisa and I started.  However, this past Saturday, we went out to dinner and a movie.  We decided to eat at Outback Steakhouse, since we both craved a Blooming Onion, and watch Brokeback Mountain.  The wait at Outback was an hour long (thank God there was room inside to sit, because it was COLD outside) but the food made it worth the wait.  Our waiter, Steve, was young, cute and very attentive.  My prime rib was cooked to bloody perfection but my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I wound up taking most of the prime rib and baked sweet potato home.  After dinner, we had at least an hour before the movie began in the theater up the street so we sat in Wendy’s van and each left a phone message for Lisa whose birthday was the following day.  We made jokes about having our Saturday Night Lesbian Date although neither of us was wearing a purple bra.

Before the movie started, Wendy and I joked about my last movie date who tried to grab my boob while watching King Kong in a crowded theater in front of a row full of kids.  I really didn’t care for the big ape… my date that is, the one on the screen was a far better gentleman.  Despite the subject matter, Brokeback Mountain turned out to be good movie, in my opinion… it’s a simple love story, simply told.  It certainly wasn’t the horrific, sexually graphic movie some people (who haven’t yet seen it, I might add) had warned me about.

After the movie Wendy drove me home and although I didn’t get a kiss goodnight (kidding!)  I’d have to say it was one of my better "Lesbian Dates".

Cold Days, Cold Feet & Warm Thoughts

What a difference a day makes.  On Thursday, it was sunny and almost 60 degrees… by Friday night the temperature dropped drastically.  On Saturday it was downright frigid with wind chills below zero.

Clara’s in DC this weekend, visiting her friend Linette.  The original plan was to pick out a bridesmaid’s dress for Linette’s wedding which was supposed to be this summer.  However, Linette and her fiance decided they need more time.  I’m glad Linette’s not rushing into marriage.  It’s such a huge, life changing step… you have to be 100% sure this is the person you want to wake up next to for the rest of your life.

Jason threw me for a loop this morning when he asked where my "boyfriend" lives and if we would have dinner at the restaurant where he now works.  Boyfriend huh?  B and I agreed to not date anyone else but does that make him my boyfriend?  It seems so simple in high school… when you date a guy, he’s your boyfriend.  Somehow the definitions change when you’re older.  Even MSN changed its relationship status options with the new profiles.  Before, there was "single, not looking" which would be appropriate now.  Now the choices are "single", "married", "separated", "divorced", "in a relationship" and "commited".  What happened to "widowed"?  Aside from "divorced", do I have an option when I’m not looking to date anyone else?  It’s rather confusing.

Sex Bomb!

On Wednesday night, I went to see Tom Jones with my friend Janet.  The man still has it… voice, moves, incredible sex appeal.  He had the women (and a few gay men) pretty hot and bothered… panties, bras (and even a pair of boxer shorts) went flying up on stage.  He sang some of his hits like "Delilah", "It’s Not Unusual" and "What’s New Pussycat" with some pretty decent covers… he opened with Three Dog Night’s "Mama Told Me Not to Come" and sang songs by Charlie Rich and Jerry Lee Lewis.  I was a little disappointed when he sang "Sex Bomb" because he rushed through it and it didn’t sound as sensual.  He made up for it by closing the show with "Kiss".  When he got to the lyrics, "I know how to undress me", he lifted his shirt and made a movement as if he were unzipping his pants… the women, including me, went nuts.  I had a great time at the show but couldn’t help but think… if he weren’t Tom Jones, he’d just be one very dirty old man… LOL.

I added a music list with some of Tom Jones’ best songs and posted pictures.  They’re fuzzy because cameras weren’t allowed in the theater but I snuck a couple… didn’t have time to focus… LOL

I don’t know about anyone else but this week absolutely dragged for me.  God, I am so looking forward to the weekend!!!

I Survived the Blizzard of 2006… NOT!!

That’s because, according to the National Weather Service, it wasn’t a blizzard since it didn’t pack winds of at least 35mph for 3 hours or more.  That’s funny… we’ve had blizzards with less snow than we got over this weekend.  Turned out to be a record for the NYC metro area which got over 2 feet of snow.  We got about 20 inches.

Despite the snow, it was another great weekend.  On Friday, Jason turned 18 and the Christian rock band he’s in, Humble Offerings, had its first concert outside of their church.  It was at a pre-Valentine dinner in Woodcliff Community Church.  The band sounded good and a large crowd of their friends turned out.  My dad came to watch them and wish Jason a Happy Birthday…. so did Mickey (Jason’s godmother) with her husband, Vincent.  It was so good to see them together again considering all they’ve been through.  When the lead singer, Adam, introduced the band, he mentioned Jason’s birthday and everyone sang "Happy Birthday".  It was really nice to hear.  Afterwards, he went with some friends to have dinner at Outback Steakhouse then watch movies at Ricardo’s house.  I dozed off on the couch waiting for him to come home… he may be 18 now but he’s still my kid.  I never sleep well when my kids aren’t home.

Saturday morning, I woke up debating the wisdom of agreeing to work overtime that day.  I was soooooooooo tired but the money’s well worth it.  I worked from 9am to 4pm and got home as it began to snow.  Later, I began watching "Sin City" with Clara but didn’t get to finish because Spice had to get her walk.  The bit that I did see looked good so I’ll make sure to watch the entire movie soon.  When I went out with Spice, it was snowing heavily and piling up.  Jason was working at a restaurant in Scotch Plains (his bandmate, John, is a waiter there and asked Jason if he wanted to work busing tables) so I dozed off on the couch waiting for him again… LOL.

Woke up early Sunday morning to the sound of thunder which was weird to hear when there’s snow falling.  Had some fun outside with Spice although she really didn’t care much for the snow drifts.  Jason was on the computer pretty much all day and Clara was in her room watching movies and cuddling with Tommy who came over from work the night before.  I spent most of the afternoon on the phone with B.  Unfortunately he didn’t get the package I sent him even though the Post Office scanned it as being delivered.    Can’t wait to see him on Friday.

Great Weekend… 2 days later

Here it is… Tuesday and I’m finally getting around to posting about my weekend which was great!

I didn’t leave work as early as I wanted to on Friday (like 5pm is early… LOL), thanks to ABC which apparently didn’t sell all its commercial time for the Super Bowl (which probably explains the umpteen ABC promos during the game) and we had to scramble with last-minute commercials and billboards.  Friday night was spent with B.  Sorry folks, not going to kiss and tell… suffice to say that the evening can be summed up with one word… WOW!!!!

On Saturday, I got to spend quality time with Jason (times like that are now few and far between so I take advantage of every moment my kids want to spend with me).  We went shopping together for our Super Bowl party.  He’s so excited about Friday the 10th and the first concert Humble Offerings (his Christian worship band) will be doing outside of West New York Assembly.  He’s got lots of friends going plus my dad and his godmother.  Afterwards, the band and his friends will celebrate Jason’s 18th birthday with dinner at Outback Steakhouse and bowling.  OMG… my baby’s turning 18.

Super Bowl Sunday was fun.  I wound up with 15 kids in my living room, including Jason, all sprawled out on my couch, love seat, Clara’s futon which we brought out from her room and various chairs.  Fortunately there were plenty of sandwiches, chips, dip and soda and the kids had a great time.  They almost missed the beginning of the game because they were having so much fun playing Catch Phrase which is like Password… instead of pairing off and one person guessing the word, you form teams and while one person gives clues, the rest of the team shouts out answers.  The commercials this year were pretty good and I pointed out the ones we scheduled for our clients.  I don’t think the kids got one with the lamb streaking through the horses’ football field (not our commercial)… having lived during the days when streaking was common in sports and award shows, I thought it was hilarious.  Clara finally came home shortly after halftime (she spends most weekends at her boyfriend’s Tommy’s home) and hung out with Jason’s friends who left when the game ended.  I was happy that the mess was very minimal… leaving the garbage can in the living room was good idea… LOL.
